Weather
Costa Rica has a surprisingly varied climate for a small country in the tropics. Although it's not uncommon to hear people refer to the seasons as winter and summer, when Costa Rican schools are on vacation, green season (approximately May through November) and dry season (approximately December through April) are perhaps more appropriate.
Even within these seasons, Costa Rica is really a cluster of mini climates. When it's cloudy in one region, sunshine can often be found just a short drive away. Average yearly rainfall varies from 40-60" in the Pacific Northwest to 240" or more south of Turrialba in the center of the country.
As to be expected, somewhat consistent rainfall is to be found in the rain forest regions, such as Arenal, Sarapaqui, Tortuguero, and the Osa Peninsula, as well as the Caribbean lowlands. But, even here, the sometimes persistent drizzle is frequently more of a pleasant backdrop to the lush setting than a hindrance to your Costa Rica vacation.
Don't let the green season scare you off. For the most part, Costa Rica has a mild climate. Even in some of the regions that receive a lot of rainfall, it's common to experience a warm, sunny morning with a few hours of rainfall in the afternoon followed by mild temperatures in the evening. Visiting Costa Rica during the green season is also a great way to take advantage of lower rates and specials frequently offered by hotels.
Temperatures in Costa Rica are no less varied than rainfall. This variety tends to be due to altitude more than season. Most people are surprised to learn that temperatures can actually fall below freezing in Costa Rica. However, if you want to set your eyes on frozen fauna in the tropics, you'll have to climb to Costa Rica's highest peak, Chirripo, at over 12,500 feet (3820 meters).
In the more easily accessible regions of the country, climates are more moderate. Throughout the year, the temperature in Guanacaste, Caribbean, Central Pacific Coast, and Northern Lowlands consistently ranges from lows of 69°F/21°C to highs of 89°F/32°C. San Jose and the Central Valley tend to be slightly cooler while Southern Costa Rica tends to boast slightly warmer temperatures.
