For years Playa Jaco was a weekend getaway for joséfinos who headed 2 hours west of the Central Valley in search of balmy waters, perennial surf, top-notch fishing and stress-free shore side surroundings. Nowadays Jaco caters mainly to a vast amount of foreign tourists who wish to enjoy a more relaxing lifestyle. Renowned for its excellent nightlife, Jaco boasts a casual ambiance full of amiable people.

The streets of Playa Jaco are overflowing with restaurants, bars, clubs and tiny shops. However, the main attraction at Jaco is the incredible surfing. Year-round, giant waves and internationally recognized breaks carry heaps of surfers to the shore and surfing lessons and board rentals are abundant here for the inspiring tablistas. While caution is advised when swimming in these rough waters, other activities in the area include sport fishing, sea kayaking and horseback riding.

While you are in the vicinity, we suggest that you visit the areas just north and south of the bustling beach town (such as Playa Hermosa). Here you will find cleaner and more striking beaches that offer panoramic views of the ocean. Just North of Jaco, the Carara Biological Reserve is also well worth a visit. As the nesting ground for Costa Rica's scarlet macaws, the reserve also features armadillos, otters, kinkajous and hundreds of species of tropical birds (just to name a few).
